Orlando Visitor Toll Pass Program: Everything You Need To Know

Here’s everything you need to know about the Visitor Toll Pass program available at Orlando International Airport (MCO) and my honest review. 

The fastest ways to get to Walt Disney World property (or Universal) from the airport require traveling on a toll road. Both routes 528 and 417 have several tolls before you get to the theme park areas. 

There are alternative routes without tolls, but they will add 15-20 minutes to your travel time each way. Most people decide to take the toll roads. 

If you’re flying into Orlando International Airport, you’ll have a few options for dealing with these tolls: 

• Pay extra to your rental car company to use their toll program
• Bring quarters to pay the tolls in cash
• Take advantage of the Visitor Toll Pass program

Here’s an explanation of all three options so you can decide what will work best for you!

Rental Car Toll Program

Rental car companies will try to sell you a pricey add-on to deal with the tolls that can cost upwards of $15 per day (regardless of whether you use the tolls that day or not). 

For example, with Hertz, you can either pay $10 per day when you use the tolls (plus the actual tolls) or pay $14 per day for their Toll Pass.

They will try to convince you that their daily program is a money-saving option, but trust me, you’ll pay FAR less with the Visitor Toll Pass program I’ll describe below. 

My advice is to decline your rental car company’s toll program when you make your reservation. 

Pay Cash at the Tolls

Another option is to carry quarters with you and stop at the several tolls you’ll encounter – it will be roughly $5.25 each way if you pay cash. 

While some regulars don’t mind doing this, the hassle just isn’t worth it to me. You’ll also pay more in cash than using the Toll Pass Program, which offers discounted fares. 

Visitor Toll Pass

Thankfully a few years ago an alternative to all of this became available. The Visitor Toll Pass program lets you pick up a hangtag from a vending machine at the airport and ONLY pay the cheaper E-Pass price for the tolls you go through on your trip!

First I suggest downloading the Visitor Toll Pass App on the Appstore here or on Google Play here. 

When you register, you’ll add information about your rental dates. 

Then you’ll add a credit card for the $10 deposit down for your hangtag. You’ll get a QR code that you scan at the machines when you arrive.

They are located on the ground floor of the airport across from the rental car counters at Terminals A & B, and right before you head outside from the rental car counters on Level 4 at Terminal C. 

At the end of your rental, you will have to return the hang tag to the vending machine at one of the terminals in order to get the $10 deposit refunded. I try to set a reminder on my phone to help me remember to return the hang tag!

You’ll be able to see all of your toll activity in your account. A week or two after your visit you will be either issued a partial refund of your deposit (if your tolls aren’t over $10) or your card will be charged for any amount over $10.
